GenAI is changing the way we work! Unlike past technologies designed for specific roles, GenAI offers benefits to everyone at any time. With capabilities like GPT embedded in major browsers, it’s readily available at your fingertips.
My Experience with GenAI:
As someone who struggles with writing engaging content, GenAI has been a disruptor. It helps me create articles that are clear, interesting, and fun to read. However, like any powerful tool, there are risks involved.
The Two Sides of the GenAI Coin:
My concern is that GenAI could create two user groups:
- Consumers: This group passively accepts information from GenAI, without verifying its accuracy. Imagine coming back from vacation with a project review looming. You use GenAI to summarize emails, but skip confirmation due to time constraints. While saving time, you risk missing crucial details and making decisions based on incomplete information. GenAI can be a valuable tool, but relying solely on its output can lead to complacency. In the military and high-risk industries, there is the term “complacency kills”. GenAI has the ability to make people complacent.
- Creators: This group uses GenAI to enhance their work, not replace it. They review and adjust GenAI’s suggestions to meet their goals. For example, I might write an article draft and then use GenAI to improve readability. Here, GenAI is a collaborator, not a writer. While it can help overcome writer’s block or structure outlines, blindly following its suggestions can drown out your own voice.
ATV Mindset:
As I create content, there are three things I tell myself:
- Acknowledge: I acknowledge that I accept the risks with using genAI tools. If the information I used was misleading or inaccurate, I will except all responsibilities and make every effort to rectify the mistake.
- Trust: I trust the information to be accurate as best as possible. The technology was invented to enhance the way we work. I do not take a negative stance against it. It is the same when team members provide me an update or information that I do not know.
- Verify: just like people, I will take the appropriate actions, steps, and measures to verify the accuracy of the information.
Transparency is Key:
As someone who uses GenAI for content creation, I’m committed to transparency. Here’s what you can expect from me:
- Original Drafts: Every article starts with my own writing, without GenAI’s assistance.
- Clarity Boost: GenAI helps refine my content for clarity and ease of reading.
- No Content for Content’s Sake: I won’t use GenAI to churn out generic content. I write only about the things that matter the most to me.
- Proper Credit: Anyone who contributes to an article (third parties, teams, individuals) will be acknowledged.
- Open Communication: Feel free to ask questions about the technology used, prompts submitted, or anything else related to the content. I encourage feedback and verification.
By understanding the potential pitfalls and using GenAI responsibly, we can leverage its power to enhance our work and creativity, not replace human judgment.
